Olivia Cleale and Colin O’Hara, junior CEHS members, took on fixing the plaque back onto the steel monument outside of Armstrong Hall. The plaque was anchored to the concrete with bolt anchors which were threaded into place. The spacers were designed on the lathe so that the plaque sits 1 inch off of the concrete, which adds dimension to the design. Check out the completed installation of the Steel Monument plaque in the pictures below.

On the Wednesday before Halloween, members of TCNJ’s CEHS and ASCE made gift bags for Anchor House and Homefront. The bags went to underprivileged kids and families in our local area. We had a great time making these gift bags for the families and hope to participate in a similar activity soon.

Olivia Cleale delivered gift bags to HomeFront and Chuck Turi delivered to Anchor House.
Last night, current TCNJ students and alumni attended ASCE’s Central Branch Annual Awards Dinner in Monroe, New Jersey. The dinner included an awards ceremony for the ASCE Central Branch along with the installation of new officers.
We would like to congratulate our advisor, Dr. Vedrana Krstic, for winning the Best Educator of the Year Award. We thank her for commitment to our society and to the TCNJ Civil Engineering Department as a whole.

We are happy to announce that TCNJ CEHS has received its charter for Chi Epsilon. We will be installed as the 143rd Chapter of Chi Epsilon on December 8th. Congratulations to all members and alumni on this achievement!
This past Saturday, our members, pledges, and associate members participated in a community service activity at The Watershed Institute in Pennington, New Jersey. We worked together and removed invasive species from a forest enclosure to help the local environment. We look forward to working with The Watershed Institute again in the near future.

Pizza and ice cream was a great way to meet our new potential members! We hope all of these wonderful candidates, consisting of both juniors and seniors, accept their candidacy and join us as pledges in the upcoming weeks. We look forward to getting to know each and every one of you more as we participate in upcoming events and volunteer work.

Anthony LaRegina and Ashley Hyde
Anthony and Ashley, two of our senior members are conducting research this summer at TCNJ through the Mentored Undergraduate Summer Experience (MUSE) Program. They are working with Dr. Bechtel and Dr. Krstic in the analysis of how the contribution of shear to the total lateral deformation changes as the exposed length of a polymer pile increases. They are using the Finite Element software STRAND7 to conduct a P-y analysis of currently available polymer based pile products. The ultimate goal of their research is to provide a reference for geotechnical engineers to use to determine if and how they will consider shear deformations.

Erin Lafferty
This summer, Erin has an internship with Modjeski and Masters in the Structures Department out of their Philadelphia, PA office. As part of her internship, Erin assists Engineers with their daily tasks in order to design and manage projects toward milestone submissions. She is responsible for drafting various bridge elements in AutoCAD, checking basic structural design calculations, checking bar schedules, and performing quantity takeoffs. At Modjeski and Masters, Erin has been gaining valuable experience in Bridge Engineering by seeing how the team works through the design process to present reliable designs and accurate plan sets to their regional clients.
